Community Flood Recovery Fund at HVCC FAQs

The fund collects local donations and provides need-based help to households affected by the flooding that began October 22, 2026. Give through December 8, 2026, or apply through December 10, 2026, at theHVCC.org/floods.

What is it?

It is a program of High Valley Community Center, Inc. (HVCC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Del Norte, Colorado, EIN 84-1599061. The HVCC board created it to help neighbors recover from the flooding.

Who decides?

A three-member Advisory Board reviews applications and awards help based on need. We live in small towns, and we know each other. That's why every application gets the same review, and anyone with a close connection steps aside.

Is this "the" fund?

The only HVCC giving page for this fund is theHVCC.org/floods. If you are unsure about a request that uses our name, call us at 719-657-2172.

How do I give?

  • Online at theHVCC.org/floods

  • In person at Del Norte Bank

  • By mail to HVCC, 595 Grand Ave., Del Norte, CO 81132. Make checks payable to "Community Flood Recovery Fund".

How will my donation be used?

Donations are used only for flood recovery and the direct costs of running the fund. They do not pay for other HVCC programs.

What is "running the fund"?

HVCC is a small nonprofit, and postage and printing are real costs. Donations pay only for the direct costs of running the fund, and we report those costs each month. Staff time is not charged to the fund.

Can I give to a specific person or family?

No. We do not accept restricted funds, and you cannot name your own recipient. Every award is based on need and decided by the Advisory Board. You could give to a family directly if you have someone specific in mind.

Is it tax deductible?

Donations are eligible for regular charitable donation tax benefits, as allowed by law. They are not eligible for the Colorado Child Care Contribution Tax Credit. Please ask your tax advisor how this applies to you.

Will I get a receipt?

Yes. We will send a written acknowledgment for your gift. Please include your name and mailing address when you give, including at the bank.

What happens if money is left over?

Any remaining funds will support other flood recovery needs in the Creede, South Fork and Del Norte area. If those needs have been met, the HVCC board will direct remaining funds to future disaster relief in our community.

Can my business, church, or group help?

Yes. You can collect a group gift or share the fund with your network. Contact HVCC at 719-657-2172 or floods@thehvcc.org.

How will I know how the money was used?

We will report total donations, fund costs and households helped at theHVCC.org/floods each month while the fund is active, and in a final report when it closes. We will not name the families who receive help.

Can I donate food, clothing, or items?

This particular program is for monetary donations only. We are  unable to collect or redistribute other items.

Who can apply?

Households affected by the flooding whose primary home is in Creede, South Fork or Del Norte. Other affected individuals and households will also be considered. Homeowners, renters and people staying with others may apply.

What can the fund help with?

Temporary housing, rent or a mortgage payment that prevents loss of your home, food, clothing, medicine, transportation, child care, and essential repairs or cleanup.

What usually isn't covered?

Second homes, vacation or rental property, recreational items, business losses, and costs already paid by insurance or another program.

How do I apply?

Apply online at theHVCC.org/floods. You can also pick up a form during open hours at HVCC, 595 Grand Ave., or at the Emergency Response Location, 810 Oak St., Del Norte. All applications must be filed online, by email to floods@thehvcc.org, or in person at HVCC, 595 Grand Ave. Call 719-657-2172 if you would like help with the form.

I lost my paperwork. Can I still apply?

Yes. Tell us what happened and we will work with you.

I have insurance or a job. Can I still apply?

Yes. Neither one disqualifies you. The Advisory Board looks at your needs and what other help is available to you.

Will you ask about my immigration status?

No. We do not ask about immigration status, and we do not ask for a Social Security number.

Will my information be kept private?

Yes. Only fund staff and the Advisory Board review applications. We share your information with other recovery agencies only if you give permission.

How soon will we hear back?

Applications are reviewed weekly and as needed for urgent cases. We will respond within 7 days of receiving a complete application. If you have no safe housing, heat or water, or need urgent medical help, tell us on your application or call 719-657-2172.

How is the money paid?

The fund often pays a landlord, contractor, utility or store directly. If that will not work for you, tell us on your application.

Do I have to pay it back?

No. Awards are not loans. Please use them only for the approved purpose.

Can I apply more than once?

Yes. Through December 10, you may apply again if your needs change or your first award did not cover an essential need, as long as funds remain.

Should I still report my damage?

Yes. Report it through Crisis Track. For other help, call 2-1-1 or text your ZIP code to 898-211.
